Schoolly D Takes Back the Mic

Schoolly D Takes Back the Mic

Philadelphia native Schoolly D is considered by many as the Godfather of gangster rap. Schoolly has recorded nine studio albums, including PSK, Saturday Night, Smoke Some Kill and Welcome to America; scored numerous films, such as King of New York and Bad Lieutenant; and lent his composing and vocal talents to popular cartoons including the cult hit Aqua Teen Hunger Force.

As music lovers, we were definitely hyped at the prospect of pushing a local legend back into the limelight. We designed a new web site and brand identity for Schoolly, and then took things to the next level with videos, collaborations, appearances and a column on a major Philly blog site.

When we heard Joe Logic was producing a Philly mixtape, we knew it wouldn’t be complete without Schoolly D. He collaborated with Chill Moody and Tone Trump on the song “West Philly.” Check out the song’s music video that we produced.

Philebrity.com is the go-to for all things Philly — arts, gossip, media, music, politics. We thought it was the perfect spot for Schoolly to write a weekly feature. Philebrity thought so, too. The posts range from Valentine’s Day advice, to poor TV programming, to Osama Bin Laden. Regardless of the topic, Schoolly always says it raw, raunchy, and like it is. He’s definitely Philly’s own.
