Song of the Day: METZ, “Headache”

Toronto’s METZ made a big splash in the underground rock scene in 2012 with their self-titled full-length for Sub Pop Records. The band combine the freewheeling nature of alternative bands like McLusky and the Jesus Lizard with the jagged distortion of Sonic Youth, with yelled, nearly unintelligible vocals rife on echos and reverb—not to mention a punishing low-end heaviness atypical for most of modern indie rock.

“Headache” is the album’s opening track and sets the table nicely for what’s to come—primarily loudly composed, brashly presented rock ‘n roll far more authentic and exhilarating than anything you might hear on the radio.
